DETECTION DOG & HANDLER DEVELOPMENT

The goal is not simply to train the behavior.
It is to understand what you are building.

Great detection work is not built from a formula. It requires understanding the dog in front of you, the behavior you are shaping, and how each training decision influences what comes next. Vickery K9 offers individualized coaching and education for sport and professional detection teams, from foundational development through advanced training and problem solving.

DEVELOPMENT BUILT AROUND THE TEAM IN FRONT OF YOU

No two detection teams are the same. The dog’s genetics, motivation, learning history, behavior, and experience all influence the training process. So do the handler’s timing, observation skills, mechanics, and understanding of the work.

Effective training means knowing what to build, what to reinforce, when to progress, and when to change course. Coaching is tailored to the individual dog and handler, with an emphasis on developing strong skills while helping handlers understand the training decisions behind them.

STRONG FOUNDATIONS

Strong foundations are not about checking off a list of skills. They come from understanding reinforcement, setting clear criteria, and building each piece with the finished behavior in mind.

INFORMED HANDLERS

Good handling requires looking beyond whether the dog was simply right or wrong. We develop the ability to read behavior, recognize what is changing, and understand how training and handling decisions influence the work. The result is better decision making in real time: knowing when things are going well, when to step in, and how to respond, both in training and deployment.

CAPABLE TEAMS

Capable detection teams are built to work with confidence, clarity, and reliability beyond familiar training setups. As the work becomes more complex, the pieces come together in a team that can adapt, solve problems, and perform effectively in training, competition, and operational deployment.

UNDERSTANDING THE WHY

Good coaching should do more than solve the problem in front of you. My role is to help you understand why we make each training decision, what to look for in the dog’s behavior, and how to assess what is happening and make effective decisions in real time.

My work is grounded in professional education and hands-on experience across sport and professional detection. As a graduate of the K9Sensus Detection Dog Trainer Academy and a current Teaching Assistant for the program, I bring both formal education and continued involvement in developing dogs, handlers, and trainers to my coaching.

That same depth of understanding is what I want you to take with you. The goal is to leave you with more than a plan for the next session. You should be better equipped to make decisions, solve problems, and continue developing your team long after the session ends.

TAKE YOUR TRAINING FURTHER

Good training isn’t about doing more. It’s about the quality of the work you put in. Understanding the dog in front of you and making intentional decisions about what you’re building can make the difference between simply spending time training and creating meaningful progress.

Whether you’re working toward bigger goals or trying to find a better way forward, if you’re ready to take your training further, let’s talk.
